For Immediate Release Ottawa, Ontario - January 26, 2006 - "This is an opportunity for Westboro seniors - the people who built this community - to stay in the community they love." These words today from Wayne Jennings, Vice President and General Manager of Canderel as he announced a change of direction for 495 Richmond Road. Jennings: "We have created a partnership with the premiere brand in the luxury independent living retirement residence industry. Canderel and Amica Mature Lifestyles Inc. are joining forces to build and operate a retirement community in the heart of Westboro." Canderel will build the five-star residence and retain an equity interest in the development with Amica. Amica has signed a long term management contract to operate it. Based in Vancouver, Amica is a leader in the design, development, marketing and management of luxury housing and services for mature lifestyles. The Westboro development joins other Amica projects currently underway in Mississauga, North York, Newmarket and Dundas. The development of this retirement community is a change in direction for Canderel at 495 Richmond Road. The original plans for the property in question had been a 54 unit, 6 storey condominium development. Wayne Jennings: "Canderel is disappointed that there was not significant enough commitments to launch the condominium project contemplated but excited about our partnership with Amica. It is a partnership that not only allows this project to proceed but the conversion from the condominium development to a retirement community fits nicely into Canderel's diversification plan." Kitchissippi Ward Councillor Shawn Little was pleased with the change of direction in the project; "There have been a lot of condominium developments over the last couple of years in my Ward, but what has been lacking are residential projects suited to the seniors in the area, many of whom grew up and have lived in the Westboro area for years but can no longer take care of their own home. The vast majority of these residents have built a life here and do not want to move out of the area." Samir Manji, Chairman, President and CEO of Amica Mature Lifestyles stated, "We are looking forward to expanding within the Ottawa market. Amica at Westboro Park will be our second Amica Wellness and Vitality residence in the Ottawa area and we believe it will set a new benchmark in luxury retirement living in the city. It will include all the amenities that one finds in an Amica Wellness & VitalityTM Residence including; a grand lobby, a dedicated home theatre room, an English style pub, a private dining room, a spa salon and a Wellness & VitalityTM Centre. We are excited to be teaming up with Canderel, one of Canada's premier and most reputable developers. We anticipate that Amica at Westboro Park will be the first of a number of projects developed and built jointly with Canderel in Ottawa and beyond. We are excited about launching this initial development with our partners at Canderel and look forward to additional developments together in the months and years ahead. " Canderel is a North American leader in comprehensive real estate development and project, building and asset management. Amica Mature Lifestyles Inc. is a leading brand manager in the management, marketing, design and development of luxury housing and services for mature lifestyles.
